How a pay raise is calculated
A raise can be described in three equivalent ways: as a percentage of your current pay, as a fixed amount, or as the new pay. Each one determines the other two, and the calculator shows all of them together.
Money is rounded to the cent. If you enter a new pay lower than the current pay, the change and the percentage are shown as negative, so the tool also works for pay cuts.
Formulas used
New pay = Current pay × (1 + Raise % ÷ 100)
New pay = Current pay + Raise amount
Change = New pay − Current pay
Change % = Change ÷ Current pay × 100 Worked example
Current pay 50,000 and a 4% raise:
- Raise amount: 50,000 × 4 ÷ 100 = 2,000
- New pay: 50,000 + 2,000 = 52,000
New pay: $52,000.00 (+$2,000.00, +4%).
Assumptions and limits
- Current pay and new pay must use the same period, for example both per year.
- The percentage is calculated on the current pay, not on a later or adjusted figure.
- If the current pay is 0 the percentage change is undefined and is shown as a dash.
- The currency choice only changes how amounts are displayed. No exchange rates are applied.
