How overtime pay is calculated

Overtime pay is the hours you worked beyond the regular limit, paid at a higher rate. That higher rate is your normal hourly rate multiplied by an overtime multiplier. A multiplier of 1.5 means each overtime hour pays one and a half times a regular hour.

This calculator takes the split between regular and overtime hours as given. It does not decide where overtime starts, because that threshold depends on your rules. The money amounts are rounded to the cent, and the total is the sum of the two rounded amounts so the breakdown always adds up.

Formulas used

Overtime rate = Hourly rate × Multiplier
Regular pay = Hourly rate × Regular hours
Overtime pay = Overtime rate × Overtime hours
Total pay = Regular pay + Overtime pay
Average pay per hour = Total pay ÷ (Regular hours + Overtime hours)

Worked example

Hourly rate 20.00, 40 regular hours, 5 overtime hours and a 1.5× multiplier:

  1. Overtime rate: 20.00 × 1.5 = $30.00
  2. Regular pay: 20.00 × 40 = $800.00
  3. Overtime pay: $30.00 × 5 = $150.00
  4. Total pay: $800.00 + $150.00 = $950.00
  5. Average pay per hour: $950.00 ÷ 45 = $21.11

Assumptions and limits

  • You enter the regular and overtime hours yourself. The calculator does not work out when overtime starts.
  • One hourly rate and one multiplier are used. If part of your time is paid at another multiplier, such as double time, run the calculator once for each multiplier and add the totals.
  • Results are gross pay before tax and deductions. Bonuses, shift premiums, tips and unpaid breaks are not included.
  • The currency choice only changes how amounts are displayed. No exchange rates are applied.
  • Inputs are limited to 100,000 per hour, 10,000 hours and a multiplier of 10 to catch typing mistakes.
