Average Calculator

Paste or type a list of numbers and get the arithmetic mean right away, together with the count, sum, median, smallest and largest value.

Your numbers

Separate values with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Use a period for decimals and do not type thousands separators.

How the average is calculated

The arithmetic mean adds up all the values and divides the total by how many values there are. Every value counts equally. The tool reads your list, rejects anything that is not a number instead of guessing, and uses a compensated sum so decimals such as 0.1 and 0.2 do not drift.

The median is the middle value of the sorted list, or the mean of the two middle values when the count is even. When the mean and the median are far apart, a few extreme values are probably pulling the mean.

Formulas used

Mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n
Median (odd n) = middle value of the sorted list
Median (even n) = (two middle values) ÷ 2

Worked example

The numbers 12, 18, 25, 31 and 44:

  1. Count: n = 5
  2. Sum: 12 + 18 + 25 + 31 + 44 = 130
  3. Mean: 130 ÷ 5 = 26

Average (mean) = 26, median = 25.

Assumptions and limits

  • All values are weighted equally.
  • Empty entries are ignored, but any item that is not a number stops the calculation and is listed so you can fix it.
  • Up to 10,000 values are accepted.
