Total to pay
$96.00
- Tip
- $16.00
- Bill
- $80.00
- Tip as a share of the bill
- 20%
How the tip and the split are calculated
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person pays the total divided by the number of people, rounded to the cent.
If you choose to round up, the total is raised to the next whole amount and the extra goes into the tip, so the effective tip percentage ends up slightly higher than the one you entered.
Formulas used
Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ People Worked example
A bill of 80.00 with a 20% tip, paid by one person:
- Tip: 80 × 20 ÷ 100 = 16
- Total: 80 + 16 = 96
Total: $96.00 ($16.00 tip on $80.00).
Assumptions and limits
- The tip is calculated on the amount you enter; include or exclude tax as your custom requires.
- When the total does not divide evenly, each share is rounded to the cent, so the shares can differ from the total by a cent or two.
- The currency choice only changes how amounts are displayed. No exchange rates are applied.
