How a percent-off discount works

A discount of 25% takes a quarter off the original price, so you pay 75% of it. Multiply the price by one minus the discount to get the sale price, and subtract to find your savings.

Two discounts do not add up. Taking 20% off and then 10% off the reduced price saves 28%, not 30%, because the second percentage applies to a smaller amount. To work back to the original price, divide the sale price by one minus the discount.

Formulas used

Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
You save = Original − Sale price
Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
Original = Sale ÷ (1 − Discount ÷ 100)

Worked example

An item priced at 80 with 25% off:

  1. Fraction paid: 1 − 0.25 = 0.75
  2. Sale price: 80 × 0.75 = 60
  3. You save: 80 − 60 = 20

Sale price: $60.00 (you save $20.00).
