How a test grade is calculated
The score is the share of correct answers: correct answers divided by total questions, times 100. If you only know the wrong answers, the correct ones are the total minus the wrong ones.
Questions can also be points, so a total of 7.5 points with 6 earned works too. The letter is chosen from the percentage rounded to two decimals, the same value shown in the result.
Formulas used
Correct = Total − Incorrect
Score % = Correct ÷ Total × 100 Worked example
A test with 20 questions and 3 incorrect answers:
- Correct: 20 − 3 = 17
- Score: 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%
17 of 20 correct = 85%, a B on the common 90/80/70/60 scale.
Assumptions and limits
- All questions are worth the same. For weighted tests, use points as the total.
- The grade scale is fixed to the common 90/80/70/60 cut-offs.
- Totals up to 100,000 are accepted.
Common questions
Can I use points instead of the number of questions?
Yes. Enter the total points available as the total and the points you lost or earned as the count. A test worth 7.5 points on which you earned 6 scores 80%.
Why is my teacher’s grade different from this result?
Teachers may weight questions differently, give partial credit, drop the lowest scores or curve the results. This calculator treats every question as worth the same and uses the common 90/80/70/60 scale, so it is a quick estimate and not your official grade.
