How ounces become cups

For liquids, one US cup is 8 US fluid ounces. The converter works through milliliters so that US, UK and metric measures can be mixed correctly.

For ingredients, a cup holds a certain weight, which depends on the ingredient. The converter turns ounces into grams and divides by the typical grams in one US cup of that ingredient.

Formulas used

Cups (fluid) = fl oz × mL per fl oz ÷ mL per cup
Cups (weight) = oz × 28.3495 g ÷ grams per cup

Worked example

12 US fluid ounces in US cups:

  1. Milliliters: 12 × 29.5735 = 354.88 mL
  2. Cups: 354.88 ÷ 236.588 = 1.5

12 US fl oz = 1.5 cups.

Assumptions and limits

  • Ingredient weights are for one US cup and are typical values, not exact.
  • The metric cup is 250 mL; the US cup is 8 US fluid ounces.
  • Values up to one billion are accepted.
